Pyrite Cubes in Marlstone
Multiple Pyrite specimens in Marlstone, from Navajun, La Rioja, Spain.
This specimen is a marvellous example of the typical cuboid crystals of Pyrite. The multiple examples in this specimen make it a rare and highly sought after piece for any collection.
Rated at 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, the brilliant golden colour and metallic lustre of the pyrite are in elegant relief to the organic nature and earthy striations of the marlstone bed.
Pyrite's metallic lustre and pale brass-yellow hue give it a superficial resemblance to gold, hence its nickname of fool's gold
Pyrite is known for its use in marcasite jewellery, which is crafted with small polished faceted pieces. Usually set in silver, marcasite dates back to antiquity and saw a resurgence in the Victorian era.
