Bird, hand carved and painted in the traditional Tiwi Island style by Maria Josette Orsto. Orsto is a versatile and prolific artist who works in a variety of media and techniques, including painting, batik-printmaking and wood sculpture. Her work alludes to the small glimpses of power, sheen and shimmer of the ancestral realm.
This work was created at Tiwi Design at Nguiu on Bathurst Island. The Art Centre was established in 1969 to promote Tiwi art and culture. A large group of artists produce paintings, carvings, prints, ceramics, fibre art and screen-printed fabrics.
