Mario Munkara - Purukupali Face

Purukupali, hand carved and painted in the traditional Tiwi Island style by Mario Munkara. Mario Munkara is a well-known visual artist from Bathurst Island. Mario has had several museum and gallery exhibitions showcasing his highly sought after sculptures.

This work was created at Tiwi Design. Tiwi Design is a creative space, located at Nguiu on Bathurst Island. The Art Centre was established in 1969 to promote Tiwi art and culture. A large group of artists produce paintings, carvings, prints, ceramics, fibre art and screen-printed fabrics at this renowned creative space.
