Porcupine or Cactus Quartz, a rare member of the Quartz family

A large example of a rare member of the Quartz family, also known as Porcupine or Cactus Quartz. These unusual specimens can only be found in the Magaliesberg Mountain region of South Africa, and were excavated for the first time relatively recently, in 2001. A community of thousands of small amethyst quartz pieces combine in each candle shaped, crystallised termination point - of which there are approximately fourteen in this example.
