Polished ammonite specimen
This ammonite from Madagascar has been sliced and polished to show the crystal filled internal chambers.
In life, these chambers would have contained gas to keep the creatures buoyant in the water. This animal lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods of Earth's history at least 66 million years ago. Ammonites became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period at approximately the same time that dinosaurs vanished.
