Curious about the diamond firetail (Stagonopleura guttata)?

This small estrildid finch is actually one of the largest finches in Australia. Ground feeders, preferring grass seeds, but known to eat insects and larvae, it's found in drier forests and grassy woodlands, west of the Great Dividing Range from South East Queensland to South Australia's Eyre Peninsula.

It can be recognised by its black banded white breast, black flanks spotted in white, and a distinctive scarlet rump which gives this bird its name.
