This unique fossil, is a polished stromatolie slab. It has been reported that Stromatolites are the oldest living fossils. While the exact origin of this specimen is unknown , they have been reported to range from 3,500 million to 3.5 billion years old as research has uncovered. The formation occurs when when sediment is trapped and the algae grow over and through this sediment, creating alternating layers of algal mat and sediment. These often form mounds and columns that when grouped together form a type of reef called a bioherm.
