Ironwood owls, 190mm high and 220mm high, hand carved and painted by Bathurst Island artist, Mario Munkara for Tiwi Design.
Tiwi bird carvings are hand made from ironwood and decorated with natural earth pigments. Referred to as Tokampini, they are present throughout the major creation story of the Tiwi people. Tokampini were mortal beings who acted as witnesses, messengers, mourners, informers, and lawmakers. Each piece reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Tiwi islands.
