Plumes and pearlshells: the art of the New Guinea Highlands
A catalogue to accompany the 2014 Art Gallery of NSW exhibition of body adornments, textiles and dance masks, which include highly prized Bird of Paradise plumes and the revered kina, or pearlshell worn by New Guinea highlanders during ceremony.
These exquisitely constructed headdresses, arm- and leg-bands, ear- and nose-rings and necklaces, made of feathers, shell, barkcloth, animal and plant fibres and natural pigments- are part of the collection of Stanley Gordon Moriarty, who, appreciating the art and beauty of the extraordinary items, assembled a collection between 1961 and 1972.
