Marcus Elieser Bloch was a German ichthyologist and physician, and published the multi-volume illustrated encyclopaedia on the history of fish. Several artists contributed to the illustrations in the book. The definitive study of fish at the time of its publication, the title is still recognized as one of the greatest ichthyology books ever produced.
