Matinee Maireener Necklace | Luminous & Significant
Matinee-Length Maireener Shell Necklace by Jeanette James
This rare, full maireener shell necklace is a stunning example of traditional Palawa craft, handmade by artist and jeweller Jeanette James. Designed at a graceful matinee length, it sits elegantly at the chest, the luminous shells making it a perfect addition to day and evening wear
Each shell is naturally iridescent with soft hues of green, pink, and silver. They are carefully hand gathered from Tasmanian waters, where four native species of maireener shells are found. Once the only shell used in this practice, the maireener, or rainbow kelp shell, remains central to a tradition that is the oldest continuing cultural practice in Tasmania.
Shell necklace-making has been passed down through generations of Aboriginal women, and Jeanette James continues this lineage with exceptional skill and care. Her work is held in major collections across Australia and internationally, and this necklace offers a rare opportunity to wear a museum quality piece of living history, with deep connection to culture and place.
