Exquisite hand built ceramic vase made by celebrated ceramicist Kevin 'Sooty' Welsh.
Born in Coonamble, NSW, Sooty Welsh was removed from his family as a young boy, later reconnecting with family and his Wailwan heritage.
This reconnection informs his art, which draws deeply from cultural traditions of the south-east region, particularly the practice of carving designs onto trees for ceremonial and spiritual purposes.
Sooty's stoneware vases and dishes are significant vessels of cultural memory. Each piece is etched with markings inspired by the ancestral Wailwan art of tree carving, a unique practice that honours Country and connection through mark making in nature are a celebration of country and culture
