Among Equals - Bilum Bag
Bilum bags handwoven by artisan weaver Lina Singu in the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea.
Bilums are created by hand-rolling plant fibres into bush twine and working with natural dyes made from plants and ochres. A traditional craft handed down through generations, many modern Bilum are made from whatever fibres are available These can include unravelled knitwear, fish netting and construction twine, as well as traditional grasses and dyes.
Each Bilum takes around 6 weeks to make and communicates life stories through pattern and colour.
Sizes vary:
Blue and Orange Bilum: Bag is 350x450mm, handles reach 430mm. Included are a blue wool tassel and pom pom
Blue Yellow Bilum: Bag is 230x300mm, handles reach 440mm. Included are a yellow raffia tassel and pom pom
Green Bilum: Bag is 290x300mm, 2-sized handles: short handles reach 110mm (intended for hand held carrying) long handles reach 370mm (intended for shoulder wear)
Khaki Bilum: Bag is 300x300mm, 2-sized handles: short handles reach 110mm (intended for hand-held carrying) long handles reach 300mm (intended for shoulder wear)
Multi coloured Bilum: Bag is 300x390mm, shoulder length handle reaches 400mm. Includes khaki wool pompom and woollen tassel
Multi striped Bilum: Bag is 330x380mm, shoulder length handle reaches 470mm
Natural Traditional Bilum: a Traditional hammock shape and design, bag is 390mm deep, and 1750mm end to end. This Bilum is designed to be tied to wear at any length that suits you.
Pink Blue and Cherry Bilum: Bag is 400x390mm, shoulder length handle reaches 570mm. Includes pink wool pompom and woollen tassel
Pink Black and Brown Bilum: Bag is 340x320mm, shoulder length handle reaches 320mm. Includes pink wool pompom and black woollen tassel
Pink Cream and Tan Bilum: Bag is 490x450mm, shoulder length handle reaches 400mm. Includes brown wool pompom and cream woollen tassel
Pink and Lilac Bilum: Bag is 350x350mm, shoulder length handle reaches 340mm.
Red, Black and Lime Bilum: Bag is 320x320mm with 100mm fringe, shoulder length or overarm handle reaches 240mm. Includes wool pompom and tassel
Yellow: Bag is 250 x 300mm, over-arm or shoulder length handles reach 300mm
Yellow and Black: Bag is 330x410mm, shoulder length handles reach 550mm
Delivery costs are calculated at checkout and include the total weight of items within an order.
Orders are posted Mon - Weds. Standard post to Australian addresses will arrive within 5 - 7 working days from dispatch date.
For international delivery, please allow an additional 14 days
