These hand-carved cultural pieces—shields, carved and plain boomerangs , and a throwing club—continue the longstanding traditions of object-making from eastern and south-eastern Australia. Each piece is finely incised with designs that reflect the artist’s deep connection to Country, drawing on natural elements and cultural practices.
The artist has been committed to this practice since childhood, inspired by historical images and guided by family and community knowledge.
Living on Biripi Country on the mid-North Coast of New South Wales, he honours the land and its people in every piece he creates. For Andy Snelgar, carving is not simply traditional or contemporary, it is an ongoing expression of culture and identity, ensuring these objects remain a meaningful part of shared history.
