Mawng Dictionary
Mawng is an Aboriginal language native to western Arnhem Land in Australia's Northern Territory. It is the primary language of the Warruwi community, spoken by around 400 people across all generations. The language is linked to the islands of Warruwi and Weyirra (part of the North and South Goulburn Islands) and to nearby areas on the mainland. The Mawng Dictionary stands as the most extensive reference available, offering detailed information on local plants and animals, cultural practices, geographical names, and kinship vocabulary—including tri-relational kunteypi terms.
An introductory section explains the spelling system and kinship structure, while numerous illustrations, an English word finder, and comprehensive lists of kinship terms, verb roots, and scientific names further enrich the dictionary.
Drawing on the accumulated knowledge of Mawng speakers and their ancestors, this dictionary compiles a comprehensive collection of vocabulary. It features not only everyday words but also preserves terms that have gradually fallen out of use—such as the names for traditional fighting spears.
The contributors listed on the cover include four respected Mawng Elders, experts in both the language and its cultural context, alongside three linguists who collaborated with them on this project. Together, they engaged in detailed discussions about each term—its spelling, usage, and meaning—to ensure that the dictionary reflects the full richness of the Mawng language.
