The Wurundjeri Woninjeka (welcome) ceremony is a cultural greeting by the Elders (Iiwiks), who give permission for yannabil (visitors) to enter onto their traditional lands of the Yarra River Valley, covering much of the present location of Melbourne and surrounds.
Aboriginal communities across Australia have boundaries that are defined by mountain ranges and waterways. To cross these boundaries or enter commynity country you need permission from the neighbouring community. Each community has its own way of welcoming to country.
