Authentic Aboriginal Clapsticks | Handcrafted on Wiradyuri Country
Authentic Aboriginal clapsticks, known as 'Milbarra wadhi' in the Wiradyuri language, are a traditional First Nations rhythm instrument used by the Wailwaan, Yuin, Wiradyuri, Gamilaraay and many other Aboriginal Nations across Australia.
Handcrafted on Wiradyuri Country from sustainably sourced timber, by Wailwaan and Yuin artist Millmullian, Laurance Magick Dennis, for Milan Dhiiyan, each set comes with a certificate of authenticity.
These are a meaningful gift, a working musical instrument and a culturally significant addition to any personal collection of First Nations art and cultural objects.
Clapsticks are struck together to keep rhythm during song, dance and ceremony. Their clear, resonant tone has accompanied storytelling and community gatherings for tens of thousands of years, and they remain a central instrument in contemporary Aboriginal music and cultural performance today.
Made on Country, with respect for Country, each pair is shaped from timber sourced from Wiradyuri Country, sometimes from fallen wood and sometimes from a branch taken with permission from a living tree. Because the timber is naturally sourced, you may see variations in grain, colour, tone and markings across each pair. These natural variations are respected by the makers as signs that tell stories of the object coming to life in the hands of the craftsperson through creator spirit. No two pairs are identical.
These clapsticks are for:
- Musicians and percussionists seeking an authentic First Nations rhythm instrument
- Educators and students learning about Aboriginal music, language and culture
- Collectors of First Nations art and cultural items
- Anyone looking for a meaningful, ethically sourced gift backed by a trusted source
Each pair of clapsticks ships with a certificate of authenticity, plus care, use and cultural information so you can play, display and look after them with respect.
