Textured Ceramic Bowl
Exquisite hand thrown ceramic dishes made by celebrated ceramicist Kevin Sooty Welsh.
Born in Coonamble, N.S.W and removed from his family as a young boy, Sooty has since connected with his family and his Wailwan roots. The Wailwan were mark makers and tree carvers, the latter being made for spiritual and ceremonial purposes.
The marks etched into the stoneware clay of Sooty's ceramic works are inspired by his Wailwan ancestors' practice of carving designs onto trees. One distinctive style of the south-east region of Australia is carving, and by acquiring cultural objects from regional N.S.W, the Australian Museum is ensuring it represents the vibrant diversity of cultural expressions across our First Nations.
