Curious about the Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae)?
The largest of Australia's native kingfishers, the name 'kookaburra' is derived from the Wiradjuri name 'Gugubarra'. The Wiradjuri are the traditional custodians of the lands surrounding Wagga Wagga, NSW.
With a whitish head and a brown eye-stripe, the upperparts of the Laughing Kookaburra are mostly dark brown. They have a distinctive mottled light-blue patch on the outside of their wings. The underparts are cream-white and the tail is barred with reddish brown and black.
Their distinctive laugh, their territorial call, is most often heard at dawn and dusk.
They are native to eastern Australia, from Cape York to Tasmania and across Victoria to South Australia's Flinders Ranges
