The Naturalist

$34.99

For those interested in the natural world, the history of museums and collecting, and the study of museums in Australia, this book examines the life and work of Allan Riverstone McCulloch, a key figure in the development of the Australian Museum.

Allan Riverstone McCulloch (1885–1925) was a leading scientist, illustrator, and senior curator at the Australian Museum. Despite his significant contributions to natural history and exhibition design, his legacy remains largely overlooked.

McCulloch dedicated his career to studying Australia’s fish species and conducted fieldwork across the Great Barrier Reef, Lord Howe Island, and other regions. He played a vital role in expanding the museum’s collections and displays. In 1922, he joined cinematographer Frank Hurley on an expedition to Papua, a journey that led to accusations of artifact theft and took a toll on his health. Suffering from dysentery, malaria, and deteriorating mental health, McCulloch’s life ended in tragedy.

The Naturalist by Brendan Atkins offers a compelling account of McCulloch’s scientific and artistic achievements, his influence on Australian museum history, and the challenges he faced in his personal and professional life.
