Unfinished Business
This catalogue for the 'Unfinished Business' exhibition includes 30 very personal stories of First Nations people living with disability in Australia.
Chair of First People's Disability Network and the Indigenous Persons with Disabilities Global Network, Gayle Rankin lives with Polio and the complications of Post Polio Syndrome. Artist Josh Lennox was left with a severe brain injury after a motor vehicle accident. Patty Mundine spent a carefree childhood playing in the dust and waste of an asbestos mine. She now lives with only 25% lung capacity.
The challenges of life with a disability have been profoundly intertwined and intensified as they intersect with Australia's complex social and political history. This history has resulted in the unacceptably high rates of disability within the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The participants in this exhibition have shared their personal stories and sat for exceptional portrait photographer, Belinda Mason, to bring visibility and attention to the critical, unique issues of disability within the First Nations community.
"Indigenous people of Australia are 3% of the total Australian population. of that 3% ... at least 50% of that population is affected by some form of disability"
