Bilums are created by hand-rolling plant fibres into bush twine and working with natural dyes made from plants and ochres. A traditional craft handed down through generations, many modern Bilum are made from whatever fibres are available These can include unravelled knitwear, fish netting and construction twine, as well as traditional grasses and dyes.
Each Bilum takes around 6 weeks to make and communicates life stories through pattern and colour.
