Black Crow and Button Shell Necklace
This black crow and button shell necklace is handmade by Tasmanian Palawi artist Jeanette James, continuing the cultural traditions of Tasmanian Aboriginal women. The necklace is hand-strung with sustainably gathered black crow shells and textured button shells, whose natural whorls display a range of colors from mauve and grey to deep tan and slate.
Jeanette James’ work reflects a deep connection to First Nations jewellery traditions, where necklace-making is both an artistic expression and an act of custodianship. By sharing these skills, she helps preserve cultural knowledge and environmental awareness for future generations.
A unique example of Aboriginal jewellery, this piece is an elegant representation of handmade jewellery that carries both beauty and meaning, shaped by the landscapes of lutruwita (Tasmania).
