Hot wire marked Coolamon
Stunning hand-carved coolamons, decorated with marks burnt onto the wood with hot wire.
Coolamon is an anglicized version of the Wiradjuri word "guliman," and it refers to a multi-purpose shallow dish used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women for carrying water, fruit, nuts, and even cradling babies.
With its curved sides and canoe-like shape, the coolamon can range in length from 30 to 70 cm.
The unique decoration technique used on these coolamon involves burning patterns into the wood using hot wire, a method that requires precision and skill to create intricate, lasting designs
Traditionally, coolamons were not only used for carrying goods but also played a role in winnowing grains for bread-making, serving as heating and cooking vessels, and even as protection from the elements.
This hot wire-decorated coolamon is a beautiful blend of functionality and artistry, perfect for displaying in your home as an item of cultural significance, artistry and craft
