Ironwood bird, hand carved and painted by Bathurst Island artist, Cyril Kerinauia for Tiwi Design.
Tiwi bird carvings are handmade from ironwood and decorated with natural earth pigments. Referred to as Tokampini, they are present throughout the major creation story of the Tiwi people. Tokampini were mortal beings who acted as witnesses, messengers, mourners, informers, and lawmakers. Each piece reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Tiwi islands.
Tiwi Design Art Centre at Nguiu on Bathurst Island was established in 1969 to promote Tiwi art and culture. This large group of artists produce paintings, carvings, prints, ceramics, fibre art and screen-printed fabrics
