Large natural Bilum Bag
A classic Bilum design - oversized and crafted with natural fibres and coloured with natural dyes, from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea.
Bilum bags are extraordinary handcrafted pieces, created by women in Papua New Guinea using traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations. These bags hold deep cultural significance, serving as both a connection to heritage and a vital source of income.
They hold an enormous capacity as the strong woven design stretches to accommodate a limitless amount.
Each Bilum bag takes approximately eight weeks to complete, with artisans using natural fibers from local plants like the Pandanus and Tulip trees. These fibres are prepared meticulously, including beating, rolling, and twisting into fine yarn. Some bags are also crafted from upcycled materials, with threads carefully spun from unravelled knitted garments.
A Bilum bag is more than just an accessory—it embodies artistry, sustainability, and cultural heritage.
