Bilum bags are extraordinary handcrafted pieces, created by women in Papua New Guinea using traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations.
They hold an enormous capacity as the strong woven design stretches to accommodate a limitless amount.
These bags hold deep cultural significance, serving as both a connection to heritage and a vital source of income.
Each unique Bilum bag takes approximately eight weeks to complete, with artisans using natural fibres from local plants like the Pandanus and Tulip tree, prepared through meticulous processes, including beating, rolling, and twisting into fine yarn. Some bags are also crafted from upcycled materials, with threads carefully spun from unravelled knitted garments.
A Bilum bag is more than just an accessory—it embodies artistry, sustainability, and cultural heritage.
