Palawa Maireener Shell Necklace | Handmade First Nations Jewellery by Jeanette James
Created by Palawa jeweller, Jeanette James, using traditional stringing techniques passed down through generations of women, this matinee-length necklace features rare Maireener shells and Black Crow shells, sustainably harvested from the cold waters of Palawa/Tasmania.
The Maireener shells are known for their lustrous, pearlescent quality, while the Black Crow shells are distinctive for their deep black exterior and creamy pearl white interior. These shells are increasingly threatened by rising sea temperatures and habitat loss, making each of Jeanette's pieces rare, relevant and culturally significant.
Jeanette James follows matrilineal traditions that extend back through many generations, gathering shells sustainably and with respect for the land and sea. The creation process can take years due to the rarity of the shells and the commitment to sustainable harvesting practices. This approach to tradition and environmental responsibility makes each necklace unique and honours both cultural heritage and the natural world.
The necklace measures 51cm in length, designed to sit just below the collarbone in the matinee style. It features a sterling silver clasp.
This necklace represents more than jewellery. It is wearable art, a cultural object and a statement of support for Indigenous artists and sustainable practices. Suitable for collectors of authentic Aboriginal art, ethical jewellery enthusiasts, and those who value the intersection of cultural significance, environmental consciousness and exceptional craft.
