Shackleton's Epic

$37.99

In celebration of the screening of the VR epic film Thin Ice, 'Shackleton's Epic: Recreating the world's greatest journey of survival.

Nearly a century after Shackleton's extraordinary 1916 expedition, when the ice swallowed their intrepid vessel, The Endeavour, Tim Jarvis and a team of five set out to replicate the journey. Using the same type of equipment, enduring the same harsh conditions, and subsisting on the same unpalatable food, this book recounts this modern re-enactment, capturing the gruelling lows, rare highs, and the immense mental and physical endurance required to survive in one of the planet's last wild frontiers.

Shackleton's epic voyage covered 1300 kilometres across treacherous seas in a small, leaking boat and through unmapped ice and snow to reach a rescue station.

Described by Sir Edmund Hilary as the greatest survival story ever told, Shackleton's third South Pole expedition in 1916 faced disaster when their ship, the Endurance, was trapped and destroyed by pack ice. Stranded with limited supplies and facing the harsh Antarctic winter, Shackleton had to decide whether to remain on a barren island and await likely death or attempt a perilous journey. Opting for the latter, Shackleton and a handful of his men embarked on an open lifeboat voyage across 900 miles of the roughest ocean, followed by a trek over uncharted glaciers. Their survival was nothing short of miraculous.

Alternating between historical events and contemporary experiences, this book is an essential read for enthusiasts of Shackleton and fans of epic adventure.
