Exquisite hand built, carved ceramic vase made by celebrated ceramicist Kevin Sooty Welsh.
Born in Coonamble, NSW, Sooty Welsh was removed from his family as a young boy, later reconnecting with family and his Wailwan heritage. This reconnection informs his art, which draws deeply from cultural traditions of the south-east region, particularly the practice of carving designs onto trees for ceremonial and spiritual purposes.
Sooty's stoneware vases and dishes are significant vessels of cultural memory. Each piece is a celebration of country and culture. Etched with markings inspired by the ancestral Wailwan art of tree carving, this unique practice honours Country and connection through mark making in nature
