Carnelian Agate Vertebrae
Organic geometric Carnelian specimen with 'vertebrae' form
Carnelian is a variety of the silicate mineral Chalcedony. Its rich red colour comes from the presence of iron oxide impurities. Polished, it is a lustrous semi-precious stone, most often used in jewellery, seals and small sculptures
The vertebrae-like structure of this carnelian is formed by the erosion of porous minerals adjacent to this harder chalcedony. Its triangulated geometric shaping, with spines that give it the name 'Agate vertebrae' is pronounced in this sizeable raw specimen.
