Lesueur Marsupials Lithograph| Museum Quality Natural History Print
This Lesueur banded hare-wallaby print is a faithful reproduction of an early nineteenth century plate by the French artist and naturalist Charles Alexandre Lesueur (1778 to 1846). A piece of genuine antique scientific illustration, it reproduces a hand-coloured engraving of the banded hare-wallaby, the Kanguroo à Bandes, recorded on Île Bernier off Western Australia during Nicolas Baudin's voyage of discovery to Australia. Printed on museum quality etching paper, this natural history wall art is an original gift for anyone drawn to a scientific, museum and antique aesthetic.
The original plate, number 27, was published in A Voyage of Discovery to the Southern Hemisphere by François Péron and Louis Freycinet, printed at L'Imprimerie Impériale in Paris between 1807 and 1816. The small wallaby Lesueur drew once ranged across mainland southern Australia. Today it survives only on Bernier and Dorre Islands in Shark Bay, which makes this museum quality art print both a beautiful artwork and a record of a species we have almost lost. Each print is made to order in three sizes, A4, A3 and A2, and supplied unframed. Please allow 7 to 14 days for printing.
Backed by the reputation of the Australian Museum, Australia's first museum.
