Patagotitan mayorum| Dinosaurs of Patagonia
Take home the giant of Patagonia. This Patagotitan mayorum figure is a detailed model of one of the largest land animals ever discovered.
The real Patagotitan lived in Patagonia, southern Argentina, around 100 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. Scientists estimate it grew to almost 38 metres long and weighed around 70 tonnes. Its name means "titan of Patagonia". Mayorum honours the Mayo family, on whose ranch the first enormous bones were found. Excavations uncovered around 130 bones from six individuals. That makes Patagotitan one of the most completely known titanosaurs, the group of long-necked giants that includes the biggest dinosaurs of all.
Patagotitan leads The World's Biggest Dinosaur: Dinosaurs of Patagonia at the Australian Museum, where its full-size skeleton cast stretches the length of the Touring Hall.
Recommended for ages 3 and up, the long neck and tail invite imaginative play. It is a hands-on way to talk about size, deep time and how palaeontologists piece together an animal from fossil bones.
Adult fans will value this highly detailed, carefully researched figure, modelled on the scientific description of Patagotitan. At around 40 cm long, it makes a striking centrepiece for a collection, shelf or desk.
Dimensions: 41cm nose to tail, 10cm height.
