Rope-Length Maireener Shell Necklace by Jeanette James

An extraordinarily long, beautiful, rare and significant Maireener shell necklace from the talented hands of Palawi jeweller, Jeanette James

This exceptional necklace is stunning example of traditional craft, hand strung by Palawa artist and jeweller Jeanette James.

Designed at a phenomenal 193 cm length, it will elegantly drape as a double or triple strand, elevating any outfit day or night.

Each naturally iridescent shell has soft hues of green, pink, and silver, on a cream pearlescent base. They are carefully gathered from Tasmanian waters, where four native species of maireener shells are found. Once the only shell used in this practice, the maireener, or rainbow kelp shell, remains central to a tradition that is the oldest continuing cultural practice in Tasmania.

Shell necklace-making has been passed down through generations of Aboriginal women, and Jeanette James continues this lineage with exceptional skill and care. Her work is held in major collections across Australia and internationally. This necklace offers a rare opportunity to wear a piece of living history and deep connection to place.

Materials: hand gathered maireener shells traditionally woven on acrylic thread

Length: 91.5 cm drop, 183 cm length
